Supporting the Body through Grief
The last two years have been filled with so much loss and change. I leaned heavily on my ancestral practices, teachers, guides, friends, sisters, family to help me through it. But I still felt so lost and stuck, like the grief was so heavy and all consuming. I decided to offer a Hayhuaricuy to help support my heart through the grief. This is a medicine that was taught to me by my Q’ero Elders from Peru. I set the intention that the medicine please show me and guide me on how I can best support my body and heart through the grief. The medicine very powerfully revealed to me through my dreams that I should continue supporting myself through drumming, singing, deepening my relationship with the Divine Feminine, and movement and care for my body.
I’m learning how to support my body through the Grief. How to listen to her and allowing her to guide me, and let me know what she needs. This is a layer I have often ignored or missed, because again, my training taught me how to logically understand the grief, and even how to energetically tend to it, but now my body had to process the loss.
As I turned to my body worker for support, she said to me something so powerful and life changing, she helped me understand that although my mind might understand the loss, my body was still used to that other person’s presence in my life. My body was still waiting for that person to return and sleep next to me, to hear their voice, to smell them, to hear them breathe. Just feeling into that realization, gave me permission to soften. Soften to my body. Not judge her for not being over it already, but deeply love her and understand her and start asking what do you need?
When we slow down to notice how our body feels and responds in different situations and environments, we start to understand better what we need. My body lets me know very clearly when she needs rest and even informs me when she needs movement. I noticed that I feel overwhelmed and overstimulated in crowded noisy environments. I noticed how angry and dysregulated I feel when I’m around people that rush, or when I am pushed to rush through something.
So part of caring for my body, has meant I’ve had to set healthier boundaries that help me move at a pace that feels good to me. That allows me to rest and recharge my energy as needed. I have had many honest and vulnerable conversations with friends, family, and loved ones to let them know what my body needs in order to feel good and grounded.
It has also meant learning how to tend to my own body, with touch, rocking, movement and sound to help soothe myself when my nervous system feels shot. There are times that I have had to do this daily as part of my morning or bed time rituals. A good friend of mine recently lost her mother, and she also shared how deeply dysregulated she feels in the mornings. It’s like your body wakes up every morning afraid and dreading facing another day without them. So these daily morning rituals and routines have helped me to release and ground so that I can face the day, and start to slowly open up to the love and magic that awaits me. My heart knows the way, but because my body has survived so much trauma and loss, she has needed so much more support and patience to help her open up to life again.
